Welcome to SPR Outdoor Adventure Club! This NEW program is for boys and girls in grades 6th - 9th and is an opportunity to explore a variety of outdoor locations and activities in Saco!

Schedule:
We will meet twice a week on Tuesdays and Saturdays from May 4th through June 12th.


On Tuesday evenings, we will meet from 5:30pm - 6:30pm at the Saco Community Center to discuss where we will be going the following Saturday and learn about our planned outdoor locations.  Sessions will feature guest speakers, nature shows, and activities like making walking sticks and fishing lures as related to the adventure of the week.

On Saturdays, we will venture to local outdoor spots in Saco. Participants will meet at the designated location and should be prepared for adventure! A snack will be provided by SPR. Participants should bring a back pack to carry their lunch and water. A health screening will be done before each meeting and masks are required.

WEEK ONE
Topic: Saco Bay Trails with Saco Bay Trail Member and Maine Guide Ryan Gorman
Date: Tuesday May 4th, 2021
Time: 5:30pm - 6:30pm
Where: Saco Community Center Room 104

Trip: Sylvan Trail-Trail work with Saco Bay Trails
Date: Saturday May 8th, 2021
Time: 9:00am - 12:30pm
Where: from downtown Saco, go north for approximately 4 miles on Main Street which turns into Rt 1 North. Just past the Rt 98/Cascade Road turnoff, turn left on Flag Pond Road. Go 0.7 mile and immediately before the turnpike bridge, turn right into the parking area (approximately 150 Flag Pond Road).

WEEK TWO
Topic: Watch "Dual Survival" and make walking sticks
Dual Survival (Rated TV-14) is a show about two people with drastically different backgrounds and survival strategies taking on some of the planet's most unforgiving terrain to demonstrate how the right skills and creative thinking can keep you alive in the most dangerous situations.

Trip: Cascade Falls
Date: Saturday May 15th, 2021
Time: 9:00am - 12:30pm
Where: From downtown Saco, take Route 1 north to Cascade Road (Route 98). Take a right onto Cascade Road and go about 1/4 mile and turn left into the parking lot.
Please note: There is no bathroom at this location. We will have our SPR vehicle available to bring a participant to the closest facility if needed.

WEEK THREE
Topic: First Aid tips with Saco Fire Department Paramedic and Firefighter Karl Finley
Date: Tuesday May 18th, 2021

Trip: Atlantic Way Trail
Date: Saturday May 22nd, 2021
Time: 9:00am - 1:00pm
Where: We will meet at the Bayview Beach gravel parking lot at 187 Bayview Road, Saco

WEEK FOUR
Topic: Watch "Aerial America" - Maine Episode and make art out of beach materials.
Aerial America is a television series airing on the Smithsonian Channel. Each episode is an aerial video tour of a U.S. state or destination in the United States. The narrated show consists entirely of aerial scenes using the Cineflex V14HD gyro-stabilized camera system mounted under the "chin" of a helicopter.

WEEK FIVE
Topic: Hiking with Appalachian Trial Hikers Effie & Emily plus make your own trail mix

Trip: Horton Woods
Date: Saturday June 5th, 2021
Time: 9:00am - 12:00pm
Where: Horton Woods: From Main Street in Saco travel west on North Street (which becomes Route 112 or Buxton Road). Follow this for 5.9 miles. Turn left onto a dirt driveway at 464 Buxton Road. Turn right into a dirt parking lot and you'll see the trailhead kiosk.
Please note: There is no bathroom at this location. We will have our SPR vehicle available to bring a participant to the closest facility if needed.

WEEK SIX
Topic: Watch "Fish My City", make fishing lures and make recycled paper with Eco-Maine!
"Fish My City" follows professional bass fisherman Mike Laconelli as he searches for the world's most iconic fish living alongside some of the world's busiest concrete jungles.

Trip: Saco Recreation Complex at Foss Road. Fishing and trail walks
Date: Saturday June 12th, 2021
Time: 9:00am - 12:30pm
Where: Saco Recreation Complex at Foss Road
Equipment: We will provide fishing rods to use but if you have your own you can bring it.
Lunch: Lunch included with the Community Picnic event!

COVID-19 Prevention Protocols
In consideration of circumstances regarding COVID-19, we will be following all current recommendations from the state of Maine agencies for Community Sports to offer this program in a safe manner; any guidelines listed below are subject to change following state guidelines at the time of the program.

For Participants:
1. Upon arrival, participants and a parent will report to the SPR Staff for a health screening and temperature check. Masks will be required during the health screening process.
2. Participants will utilize hand sanitizer at the health screening station before joining the program.
3. Masks are required at all times.

Equipment Procedures:
1. Any shared equipment will be cleaned and sanitized between uses.
